Description
Our plastic microwaste Barrier Bags are an effective way to prevent microfibres that shed in the wash from entering our waterways. Made from a fine polyamide 6.6 mesh, they allow you to wash synthetic garments (eg. polyester, acrylic etc) and our microfibre cloths without releasing plastic microfibres into the marine environment.
They work by reducing the number of fibres that shed and capturing the ones that do before they are flushed into our waterways with the washing machine wastewater.
Even non-synthetic clothes last longer when washed inside our Barrier Bags. You can expect all garments to shed over 80% less than without a Barrier Bag.
After several washes, you will be able to see tiny microfibres collecting in the seams of the Barrier Bag. Once dry, they can be removed and disposed of appropriately.
Each bag can hold 5-10kg of garments or cloths, and you can use multiple bags in each wash. We recommend washing at 40 degrees celcius or lower. Not suitable for use in a tumble dryer.
What causes microfibres to shed?
Research is still emerging about the ways that microfibres are loosened in the wash. This article suggests that using less water and fuller loads will reduce microfibre shedding further. If you are washing synthetic garments or cloths, avoid the delicate cycle too.
Ultimately, reducing your consumption of garments made from synthetic materials is the best way to avoid microplastic pollution. Millions of tonnes of synthetic garments end up in landfill at the end of their lives. Because we use microfibre cloths and have not found an effective non-synthetic alternative, we felt it was important to mitigate any microplastic pollution we create. This is why we began using our Barrier Bags. Every little step helps prevent plastic pollution from entering our environments.
